Millennium Fit-All Two Speed / Free Engine Gear For Pioneer / Vintage Motorcycle

Norton Nut's Millennium Fit-All Two Speed / Free Engine Gear For Pioneer / Vintage Motorcycle
Do you have a Pioneer Motorcycle which you don't use because it has direct drive from the engine and no clutch? If so, this could be the very thing you need.

It is a genuine period accessory which was patented by A.D. Powell & co in 1906. It provides two gears and a free engine clutch. The manufacturing rights were later taken over by Lake and Elliot Ltd., who continued the produce it, with some improvements, until at least 1914.

The gear mechanism itself is almost complete, only a few small parts such as a locking nut and dust cover are missing and it all seems to be in quite reasonable order.
The operating mechanism is quite rusty and although it could be cleaned up and re-used, it would perhaps be better to remake some parts using the original parts as patterns.

The Primary Sun Wheel which fits directly on to the engine main shaft is bored out with a small taper, about 5/8" maximum diameter and the Attaching Sleeve Nut has a 1/2" thread. Both these items may need to be machined out to fit your engine main shaft. (In 1914, Lake and Elliot offered this service for five shillings extra)

In addition to the items described above, you will get the spares also shown in the first picture, consisting of two clutch plates and a pulley with primary and secondary sun gears. Also a brake band and a couple of levers but these may belong to something else.
Also included in the sale is a BMS photocopy set of the 1914 Maintenance Manual / Parts List which differs slightly from this gear but it does give a useful overview of the device and instructions for setting it up.
