Vintage / Veteran Motorcycle Philipson Engine Pulley

Norton Nut's Vintage / Veteran Motorcycle Philipson Engine Pulley
This was a popular accessory used to give some variation in gearing when fitted to the engine shaft of any motorcycle which drives the back wheel directly by a belt.

The makers said that the pulley can be adjusted to work automatically but generally it was found that a dab of the left boot on to the brass spring housing would help the outer flange to open up giving a lower gearing. There is not much wear on the square section thread and the large clock-type spring seems to be alright.

This particular pulley does require a repair. There is a crack in the central spigot, it passes from the end, through the keyway and towards the inner belt flange.
I have indicated this with white arrows in one picture.
It has been suggested that it could be repaired by filling the keyway with weld and machining a new keyway further around. Please make up your own mind about this. It would certainly need a skilled welder to do this without distorting the internal thread.
